Adrenal Fatigue in Pregnancy

Trying to conceive and being pregnant are both hard work and exhausting, now add adrenal fatigue into the mix and it’s no wonder you can’t get anything accomplished. Adrenal fatigue can throw everything having to do with energy out of balance.

Stress is a Main Ingredient for Adrenal Fatigue

One of the things your adrenal glands do is respond to stress by secreting cortisol and adrenaline hormones. We sometimes call this our fight or flight response. This is not only necessary but also healthy. The problem occurs when your stress levels become elevated for long periods of time and interferes with your hormone production. Progesterone is blocked by cortisol, so when your stress is higher, our progesterone decreases. Progesterone is absolutely necessary to support your body for implantation and preventing miscarriages.

Listen to Your Body When It Says REST

Listen up mamas…It’s hard work creating and human and your body needs lots of rest especially in your first trimester! When you are sleeping your stress hormone (cortisol) is at it’s lowest, and when you are resting, your adrenals are resting as well. You are going to feel better when you can get 8-9 hours of sleep and still take an afternoon nap.

This is normal, don’t beat yourself up for thinking you are tired all the time, this is your body telling you what it needs. LISTEN to it. Don’t think you need to be a superwoman!

Diet and nutrition are important and one of the keys to supporting your body in pregnancy is getting enough protein. Make sure you are getting 80-100 gm a day. Beans are a great source of protein as well. Include quality carbohydrates and good fats. Avoid any processed simple sugars and drink half your body weight in ounces of water. Don’t skip meals, in fact I recommend eating 6 small meals throughout the day, each including a snack before bed.

Good Things to Remember

·      Cortisol isn’t always bad, but timing is KEY! It plays an important role in supporting blood sugar, blood pressure, energy, and your anti-inflammatory response.

·      Cortisol levels rise after exercising because cortisol helps to regulate blood sugar, so when your glucose levels are low, cortisol will rise. Exercise is good in pregnancy, but don’t overdo it.

·      Melatonin and cortisol have opposite jobs in the body. When melatonin is low cortisol is high.

·      Make relaxation and meditation a regular part of your life.
