Tummy Tamer

Are you one of those mamas who spent your whole pregnancy wondering who your baby would look like? What would her little personality be like? Would she like to snuggle and be snuggled? Would he have his dad’s hands and big feet? Would he love sports like his dad? Nine months of dreaming and imaging all the things about this baby inside of you. You probably prayed many times for easy delivery and a healthy baby. What didn’t cross your mind was reflux, in fact you may not even know what this is.

Most babies spit up, it’s totally normal and happens all the time. Babies sometimes get too much milk too fast and the only thing the body knows is to spit it back up. Or your baby may have powerful burps and a little milk can’t help but come back up. Your baby usually doesn’t have any discomfort and it only happens occasionally and only a small amount.

When it becomes a problem is when the baby is choking, coughing, or gagging regularly when eating and even experiencing projectile vomit. Your baby seems to be in pain and may even have trouble gaining weight and sleeping.

You may get advice from your friends or even your doctor to pump and then add infant cereal to your milk or formula to thicken it up. Trust me…this is NOT a good idea, it may in fact it may help the milk stay down but it doesn’t actually help with the problem itself. It’s just a band-aid.

When you do this then the baby may experience “Silent Reflux” this is where the baby swallows it back down rather than spitting it up and now you’re are dealing with LOTS of pain, crying, diarrhea, and constipation and everyone is miserable. The other part of that scenario is babies don’t actually have the enzymes to digest grains properly until they are 2 years old. This just contributes to an even more weakened gut. Some cases of infant reflux may be due to an overpopulation of bad bacteria.  Adding in good bacteria like PB Assist Jr. may help overrun the bad bacteria.  It can be given in a spoon with only a few drops of water that can be added to pumped breast milk or formula and given in a bottle or you may even apply to your nipple and allow babe to swallow it while eating. Try a pinch of this each time you nurse.

Nurse or feed in a more upright position.  Often, reflux is the result of drinking too much milk too fast.  When in upright position babe has better control of how much milk he/she is getting.

If you’re breastfeeding, try from only one breast each feeding.  This allows babe to get both the fore-milk (the more watery thirst quenching milk) and the hind-milk (the more rich, fatty, nourishing milk).

Even something as easy as a chiropractic adjustment may help. Your chiropractor has seen this very thing many times and usually knows just the right adjustment. Ask around for referrals for a DC who works with babies. When you find the right fit, it can be magical. You might think this is a stretch but please check out natural Hazelwood necklaces for infants. Hazelwood works by creating a more alkaline environment in your body through direct contact with your skin, which may help the symptoms of reflux.

For breastfeeding mamas…cut out all dairy and void soy, wheat, and eggs.  Your baby may have an actual allergy to something you’re eating.
